Frequently Asked Questions

Where does my session take place?

Your session takes place in a private, comfortable treatment room designed for focused, professional care. The environment is calm and quiet, with attention to warmth, cleanliness, and ease so your body can settle into the work.

Do I need to be completely undressed?

No. You should undress to your level of comfort.

Some techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed and properly draped. Other techniques work just as well over clothing. We’ll always work within your comfort level and adjust accordingly. Sport stretch sessions are clothed. Shorts and a sports bra are good for more sport oriented work.

Will my therapist be present while I undress?

No. Your therapist will leave the room so you can undress privately, get settled on the table, and cover yourself with the sheet and blanket provided.

Will I be covered during the session?

Yes. You will be appropriately draped at all times. Only the area being worked on is uncovered, and your comfort, warmth, and privacy are always prioritized.

What parts of my body will be worked on?

That depends on the session type and your goals.

A full-body session may include work on the back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, hips, hands, feet, and head. More focused sessions may concentrate on specific areas related to injury, training, or pain patterns. Nothing is ever worked on without your consent.

What will the massage feel like?

That depends on the service you choose and how your body responds that day.

Some sessions are calming and restorative, others are more focused or specific. Pressure is always adjusted based on tissue response, nervous system input, and your feedback. Massage is most effective when the body feels safe and receptive — not when it’s bracing or enduring discomfort.

Please let your therapist know if anything feels too intense, too light, or simply not right. Communication is part of good care.

Do you offer different types of massage?

Yes. Human Body Works offers several distinct approaches, including Wellness Massage, Sports Massage, Clinical Injury Treatment, Deep Tissue Massage, and Prenatal/Maternity care.

Each service is defined by intent and context, not just technique. If you’re unsure which to choose, we’re happy to help guide you — and we adapt sessions as needed.

What should I do during the session?

You don’t need to “do” anything.

Get comfortable, breathe normally, and let us know if you need adjustments to pressure, positioning, temperature, or pacing. Some people talk, some rest quietly — both are completely fine.

If questions come up, you’re always welcome to ask.

How will I feel after my session?

Most people feel relaxed and more at ease in their bodies. Some notice reduced pain, improved movement, or better sleep.

Occasionally, people feel temporarily tired or sore — especially after more focused or injury-related work. Hydration and gentle movement afterward are helpful. We’ll always let you know what to expect based on the session you receive.

What are the benefits of massage therapy?

Massage therapy may support:

  • Reduced muscular tension and pain

  • Improved circulation and movement

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Recovery from physical or emotional stress

  • Injury healing and tissue resilience

  • Improved sleep and body awareness

Benefits are cumulative and often build with consistent care over time.

Are there medical conditions that would prevent massage?

Some conditions require modifications or medical clearance.

Before your session, we’ll ask general health questions so we can provide safe, appropriate care. It’s important to let us know about injuries, surgeries, medical conditions, medications, or pregnancy. If you’re under active medical care, we may request or recommend coordination with your provider.

Do I need to tip my therapist?

Tipping is never expected.

If you choose to tip, it’s always appreciated and can be given in cash or added at checkout. Your care and experience are our priority, regardless.

One Last Thing

If you ever feel unsure, uncomfortable, or curious about anything related to your session — before, during, or after — please ask. Thoughtful care starts with clear communication.
